This table (Militaire tafel in Dutch) is a part of the serie designed for the interior of the Catholic Military Academie in Utrecht. Unlike previous experimental furniture designs (such as the Red/Blue chair), the contact called less for a programmatic statement on chairs and more for stability, lightness and lowest possible production cost.

The table top is not connected directly to the longitudinal stretchers but to narrow crosspieces above them, this creates a light spatious construction. Rietveld began experimenting with this type of spatial constuction in a table for the house of B. de Ligt in 1918.
